The benefits of paddock rolling or pasture rolling help to level uneven ground that has been disturbed in the winter by grazing livestock and tracks created by tractors and vehicles. Grass is compressed during paddock rolling which makes it spread out, creating a thicker sward and preventing weeds from appearing.

We usually carry out paddock rolling after harrowing which helps push any stones back into the ground that have been pulled up by the harrows. Paddock rolling is normally carried out with a flat roller. However, we use a Cambridge roller for reseeding and over seeding. Because the roller is ridged it tends to make better contact with seed and soil encouraging better germination. Rolling using either type of roller should always be carried out after over seeding or creating new leys.
